CARGO insurers face huge claims from the loss of hundreds of containers ablaze on a Hyundai Merchant Marine ship off the coast of Yemen.

The 5,551 teu Hyundai Fortunecaught fire around midday Monday after an explosion in one of the containers and was still burning fiercely yesterday afternoon when salvage tugs arrived on the scene.

At that stage, the fire that began in the stern was spreading to the accommodation block and beyond, and the priority was to contain rather than fight the blaze.

That is likely to take several days, a spokesman for salvor SvitzerWijsmuller told Lloyd’s List last night.

The ship was carrying the equivalent of 5,100 20ft containers, HMM advised partner lines, and most would have been loaded.

The value of the lost cargo alone could exceed $100m, given the average worth of containerised freight shipped from Asia to Europe.

Insurers use a rule of thumb figure of $35,000 teu, but note that some containers such as temperature-controlled boxes could be carrying up to $1m worth of consumer goods or produce.

Brokers say the hull value of the 1996-built Hyundai Fortune would probably be $35m-$40m. Replacing it with a new ship of the same size would cost $75m-$80m.

It is far too soon to say whether the ship will be declared a write-off, but photographs and a video clip show that at least half the vessel is on fire, with flames clearly visible and dense black smoke billowing hundreds of feet into the air.

But some of what appears to be smoke may be steam, said one expert who had studied the footage.

At least seven of the world’s top liner shipping companies have containers on board. A large number of boxes have been destroyed or fallen overboard.

The ship is one of the first on a westbound sailing for the new space swapping agreement between the New World Alliance and the Grand Alliance.

It is deployed in the Asia-Europe Express service that HMM operates in partnership with APL and MOL, and had left Singapore last week bound for Rotterdam where it was scheduled to arrive on March 30. NYK, OOCL, Hapag-Lloyd and Malaysia’s MISC also had cargo on the ship.

The fire followed an explosion in the stern of the vessel.

The ship has been evacuated and all 32 crew members are safe, HMM said yesterday. There were no fatalities, but one seafarer was injured.

As there was no direct communication with the vessel up to late yesterday HMM said it was difficult to be more precise as to the extent of the damage.

“The priority at this time is to bring the fire under control with fire tugs standing by, and then bring the vessel into port within the vicinity where a full inspection can take place of the vessel and customers cargo can be transferred to alternative vessels and brought to Europe at the earliest opportunity,” the company added.

The Panama flag ship is entered with the Britannia P&I club and classed with the Korean Register of Shipping.

A Dutch air defence and command frigate rescued the crew. The Hyundai Fortunewas around 120 miles east of Aden, 60 miles off coast, at the time of the accident.

The Dutch destroyer was later relieved by the Royal Navy’s HMS Lancaster that continued to provide navigation warning to other shipping in the area.

Whether or not the vessel is eventually declared a constructive total loss, it could still return to service. The 4,400 teu Hanjin Pennsylvania was so badly damaged by a fire in 2002 that it was sold for scrap, only to be rescued from the breakers and is now operating as the Norasia Bellatrix.

Salvage company SvitzerWijsmuller has started to tackle the devastating blaze on the Hyundai Merchant Marine (HMM) boxship off Yemen.

The AP Moller-Maersk group company said the firefighting tug Wadi Hassan had arrived on site on Wednesday following the incident on Tuesday. It has seven experts on board.

The team carried out an initial inspection of the 5,550-teu Hyundai Fortune (built 1996) and then began fire fighting activities.

It said the work was concentrated on the first line of containers in front of the bridge, with the fire having progressed from the stern through the accommodation to the containers on the fore ship.

“The aim at the moment is to stop the fire progressing before actually attacking the fire in the accommodation and the stern when further resources are on site,” the company added.

Another two of its tugs, Rakhyut and Smitwijs Rotterdam, were due in the Gulf of Aden area on Friday.

And another tug will be mobilised from Hodeida to Aden in order to possibly be transferred into a fire fighting tug with mobile equipment being flown in.

Svitzer added: “Further teams and salvage and fire fighting equipment are being mobilised as the need arises.”

All of the 27 crew were rescued by the Dutch navy on Wednesday and were being repatriated on Thursday.

No official cause of the fire has been revealed as yet.

Странно было бы если б они этого не сделали. Я своим оперативникам сразу сказал, когда еще добросовестно заблуждался в том что наш контейнер на судне - будет заявлена общая авария.

London, Apr 5 -- Independence Day parties in the US and other celebrations across North America and Europe could be without their traditional firework displays this summer because of safety fears following the c.c. Hyundai Fortune blaze. Hundreds of containers are due to be shipped from Asia in the next couple of months, but could instead be stranded on the quayside. Hyundai Merchant Marine, owner of the stricken containership that was almost split in two by explosions in the cargo hold a fortnight ago, has now put a total ban on firework shipments and other hazardous materials, according to importers, The Korean line would not comment on the reports, but one of the largest shippers of fireworks told Lloyd's List that HMM has imposed a moratorium, even though it shares the views of others that the blast and subsequent blaze on the 5,551 teu ship were probably caused by something else. Bengt Henriksen, president of California-headquartered Quality Logistics, said the embargo had placed his company in a "dire situation" as it has more than 400 containers in the pipeline that are due to be shipped over the next few weeks ahead of the Jul 4 public holiday in the US. Neither he nor the Unaffiliated Shippers of America group that represents US firework importers believe correctly packed fireworks represent a risk. But there is a widely-held suspicion in industry circles that cargo is being mislabelled, a practice thought to be particularly prеvalent in the Asia to Europe trades where cargo tends to be shipped on a cost, insurance and freight basis. That places responsibility for arranging shipment on the exporter, rather than the importer. In contrast, firework shipments to the US are on free on board terms, placing control into the hands of the American importer that must comply with an array of strict safety regulations. Wrongly-marked cargo may be loaded into the hold rather than on deck, a situation that may have accounted for the Hyundai Fortunedisaster. In an email to Lloyd's List, independent fireworks expert Charles Weeth, who investigated the Hanjin Pennsylvania fire, said modern fireworks formulae are very stable, "and only a series of packing, handling or other mistakes could possibly lead to their ignition onboard a ship." More likely, he said, given the hole on the port side of the ship above the water line near the engine compartment, is a fire and explosion below decks which then ignited the cargo, including the fireworks, above deck. The blaze on the Hanjin Pennsylvania in 2002 was thought to have been the result of fraudulent cargo declarations. Hyundai Fortune was heading from Asia to Europe when the fire broke out off the coast of Yemen. The crew escaped, but the hull is expected to be declared a total loss because of the devastation to the stern. Hundreds of containers have been destroyed. Several other lines had cargo on the HMM ship, including both its New World Alliance partners and members of the Grand Alliance. So far, other lines are not thought to have stopped loading fireworks. A spokesman for NYK, one of those with slots on Hyundai Fortune, said yesterday that it was still carrying fireworks "under strict conditions", mostly loaded in Japan. But consortium partner Hapag-Lloyd said it does not accept any fireworks manufactured, classified or originated in China or Hong Kong. Mr Henriksen, who was asked by HMM to put together a paper on the shipment of fireworks following the Hyundai Fortune disaster, is warning that there could be further such incidents unless rules are tightened up in the Asia to Europe trades. The paper concludes that fireworks shipments to US are highly regulated and importers in principle all abide by the rules as any violations have serious consequences. "Fireworks shipments to Europe are regulated but with rules differing by country. Importers have no responsibility and misdeclarations are rampant and almost accepted as a general practice. "We did it before, so why not again" is a standard reaction of China forwarders," the paper states.

UNDAMAGED containers on the Hyundai Fortune, which was partly destroyed by explosions and a huge blaze off the Yemen coast last month, could be delivered to customers within a few weeks.

Insurance claims for the lost freight are heading for the record books, with underwriters saying this is likely to be the biggest cargo loss ever. The ship was packed with high value consumer products when it caught fire.

Hyundai Merchant Marine’s 5,551 teu containership is now under tow and should arrive in the Omani port of Salalah later this week.

There, a more detailed survey of the vessel will be undertaken and arrangements made for intact containers to be discharged and loaded onto other ships heading for Europe. A large number are thought to be in good shape, despite the devastation to the ship’s aft section.

In a statement to Lloyd’s List, CK Yoo, managing director for HMM (Europe), said the line’s head office in Seoul was studying how quickly sound boxes could be put on to other vessel and shipped from Salalah to the relevant discharge ports. Subject to securing alternative transport in time, it is hoped that arrangements can be made to start getting cargo to Europe around the middle of May, Mr Yoo said.

AP Moller-Maersk’s salvage company SvitzerWijsmuller is in charge of the rescue effort. The port of refuge chosen is also a major transhipment hub for sister company Maersk Line and every effort is being made to ensure day-to-day operations are not disrupted by the arrival of the charred hull and hundreds of burnt out containers, a spokesman said,

Photographs show that the stern of the ship has been virtually destroyed in the inferno that blazed for more than a week.

Insurance claims for the lost cargo are expected to total between $100m and $300m, making it the biggest such loss ever. If the ship is declared a total loss, that too could make it the largest containership casualty.

The Hyundai Fortunewas deployed within the New World Alliance’s Asia-Europe Express service and was also carrying cargo for Grand Alliance lines. That means that seven major container lines are directly affected by the accident — APL, MOL, NYK, Hapag-Lloyd, OOCL and MISC as well as HMM. Compensation settlements are expected to be highly complex and take years to resolve.

The ship was about to be phased out of the Asia-Europe Express and replaced by the Hyundai Shanghai, a 6,800 teu newbuilding that will now be slotted into service loop.

The cause of the blaze is still unclear, with several fire experts discounting the original theory that fireworks were to blame. Nevertheless, HMM has placed a temporary embargo on fireworks on any of its ships while the accident is investigated.

- Firefighters extinguished a blaze in the engine room of the 3,780 teu 1988-built containership MOL Initiative on Sunday about a week after the fire broke out, MOL said yesterday, writes Keith Wallis in Hong Kong .

The firm said it was taking the incident seriously and a full investigation is underway.

The fire started in the early morning on April 3 when the vessel was off Nemuro in Hokkaido, Japan.

The 26-person crew was evacuated by the Japanese coast guard on April 4 when smoke reached the accommodation block. No injuries were reported among the crew, who comprised three Ukrainians, seven Russians and 16 Filipinos, and there has been no oil pollution.

A rescue vessel towed the ship to an area off Hakodate, where full-scale firefighting efforts began on the evening of April 7.

Rescue vessels from Nippon Salvage are standing by the vessel, which was on a transpacific voyage between Tokyo and the Oakland on the US west coast. Aside from MOL boxes, the ship is carrying cargo from APL and Hyundai Merchant Marine.

London, Apr 21 -- A SvitzerWijsmuller Salvage BV report, dated today, states: After c.c. Hyundai Fortune had been towed into Salalah port last Monday morning (Apr 17) and with the actual discharge starting soon after, discharge of the sound and (most of the) wet containers was completed early yesterday morning. The vessel was then towed out of port and anchored at Salalah anchorage for further preparations for towing it, with some damaged containers remaining on board, to next destination. In total 2,249 containers were discharged in Salalah port during a period of less than two days according to a detailed discharge plan prepared by SvitzerWijsmuller Salvage BV specialists. The plan incorporated the discharge sequence of the containers and, simultaneously, the necessary ballasting activities that had to be executed to ensure stresses remained within acceptable limits. A complicating factor in the process was the fact that the vessel's own ballast system could not be used anymore and that, as such, alternative means had to be engaged to achieve the required result. (See issue of Apr 20.)

The fire damaged containership Hyundai Fortune has been put up for sale in an “as is” condition indicating that the owners and underwriters are reluctant to undertake the major repairs required.

The Salvage Association is inviting bids for the 5,550-teu Hyundai Fortune (built 1996) which was badly damaged by a fire that also caused major cargo loss.

The Salvage Association tells TradeWinds that it has been instructed by the owners and underwriters to offer the Hyundai Fortune for sale, but can not give any details of the likely cost of repairs or the value the damaged ship might have as these are commercially sensitive matters.

Thick smoke rises from the Hyundai Fortune. The vessel was insured for $70m by Hyundai Marine & Fire Insurance of South Korea, but most of the risk was broked into the London market by Marsh, with the cover led by the XL group.

The sale suggests the underwriters regard the Hyundai Fortune as a constructive total loss (CTL) but are trying to recover more than they would receive if the vessel was sold for demolition.

Underwriters are also facing huge cargo claims as the vessel was trading from the Far East to Europe and would have been carrying high value products such as digital cameras, MP3 players, cellphones and LCD screens that could put a value of $100,000 per box on the damage.

The Hyundai Merchant Marine containership is currently anchored off Khor Fakkan, Sharjah, with potential buyers expected to inspect the vessel and take delivery there.

The Hyundai Fortune fire was extinguished by SvitzerWijsmuller under a Lloyd’s open form 2000 salvage contract with the vessel towed to port for discharge of undamaged containers and then to its current anchorage.

The move to offer the Hyundai Fortune for sale suggests that a massive repair may be economically viable even if the vessel is a CTL.

The 4,400-teu Hanjin Pennsylvania (built 2002) was acquired by the Ofer group after Reederei F Laiesz and lead underwriter Allianz agreed the ship was a CTL.

The owners and underwriters estimated that the vessel which was only eight months old at the time of a devastating fire needed $40m of repairs against an insured hull value of only $45m.

Zodiac Maritime, a London based arm of the Ofer group bought the Hanjin Pennsylvania wreck for about $4m and spent $20m on repairs at China’s Chengxi Shipyard replacing 2,700 tons of steel, effectively ending up with a half price new vessel, the Norasia Bellatrix.

Hyundai Fortune
Norasia Bellatrix.
